Who is a Health Promotion Officer?

A Health Promotion Officer (HPO) delivers preventive health programmes in workplaces, schools and communities — running screening events, crafting health messages, and supporting behaviour change programs that improve workforce well-being.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Plan & deliver health education sessions and materials
  • Coordinate screening (BP, temperature & glucose), make referrals to care
  • Design workplace wellness programmes and track outcomes
  • Advise employers on simple occupational health improvements
  • Maintain basic health registers & report trends

Classroom theory

Entry Requirements

  • 18 years or older
  • Valid South African ID or passport
  • Basic literacy (English) to complete assessments
  • Grade 9 – 11 (but if you do not have a National Senior Certificate, you will need to complete a Foundational Learning Competence Certificate)
  • Ancillary Health Care NQF Level 1

Duration, Assessment & Certification

Delivery options: intensive (approx. 5–10 days), blended or workplace-based modules. Assessment: written/oral knowledge check and observed practical tasks. Successful learners receive a Denotech Certificate of Competence.
